Depression is sometimes referred to (usually in medical circles) as a depressive disorder. A depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things.

A depressive disorder is not the same as a passing “blue mood.” It is not a sign of personal weakness, or a condition that can be willed or wished away. People with a depressive illness cannot merely “pull themselves together” and get better. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years.

Treating Depression

Conventional medicine attempts to treat depression at the symptom-level, and there are three major problems with pharmaceutical antidepressants: they don’t target the root-cause of the illness, they can become addictive, and they have harsh side effects. These side effects can include: nausea, sleeping problems, nervous disorders, eating disorders (e.g. loss of appetite), impotence and loss of libido, sweating, excessive weight gain, headaches and fatigue/weakness.

At The Centre For Integrated Health, our experience suggests that depressive disorders are often the result of hormone imbalances. Many cases are also caused by nutritional deficiencies, which lead to psychological symptoms. Nutritional supplementation can therefore play a very positive role in effective treatment of the root causes, and be more important than approaching the issue from a mental or emotional angle. Adrenal issues may also be at fault, in which cases we often find that carefully selected homeopathic remedies can lead to dramatic improvement in the condition.

Case Study

Mr “A” was a professional counsellor who contacted us after developing depression; a condition that he said had been worsening over the 12 months leading up to his visit. The symptoms included constant low energy, poor quality sleep, no libido and a susceptibility to high levels of stress.

One of our experienced practitioners conducted an Asyra mental and emotional scan, which confirmed our homeopath’s planned course of treatment. By his next visit, and in line with expectations, the homeopathic remedies had alleviated many of Mr “A”s’ symptoms and remarkably improved his general mood and outlook.

Based on this improvement, he was able to address and resolve some emotional issues which he had not previously been able to deal with. Two months later, a check-up revealed that he was entirely symptom-free!
