Yucca - A Gift From The Desert

For centuries, Americans and Mexicans have used yucca to treat a wide variety of maladies: including headaches, gonorrhea, arthritis and rheumatism.

Indians used the plant for many products, from rope to sandals, and the frothy soap from roots was used as a cleansing agent, or made into a skin cream for treating rashes, joint inflammation and wounds.

Newborn infants were washed in it to clean and make their hair grow, and adults used it for a hair tonic or to fight dandruff. They still maintain that there is no better tonic or stimulant for the hair than a free application of a solution of yucca!

Properties

Yucca Schidigera liquid has been clinically shown to be antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal (both topically and internally). It also…

  • Has cholesterol-lowering properties
  • Helps to lower blood pressure
  • Guards against heart disease
  • Is an immunity booster
  • Has been shown to enhance the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

What Makes Yucca So Special?

The frothy soap from the roots are incredibly rich in steroid saponins. Saponins are the precursors of cortisone – an anti-inflammatory naturally produced by the adrenal glands. This makes it a popular remedy for all kinds of inflammation, such as arthritis, rheumatism, bursitis, colitis, and other inflammatory conditions.

Modern researchers believe yucca saponins block the release of toxins from the intestines, which inhibit normal formation of cartilage. This makes yucca particularly useful in formulas designed to break up obstructions, which include the chronic degenerative diseases, joint inflammation, arthritis and rheumatism.

Yucca and Athletes

Yucca saponins increase nitrogen retention by around an incredible 35%. It achieves this by blocking the urease enzyme, which is responsible for converting the nitrogen from protein to urea. This is of particular interest to athletes and bodybuilders, as it means that more lean muscle can be built from the available protein.

Digestion and Nutrition

As saponins have both a water-soluble and fat-soluble end, they play an important role in nutrition due to their strong surfactant power. When they come in contact with the membranes of the cells of the intestinal wall, they become permeable and permit a better absorption of nutrients. Digestion and the utilization of food are vastly improved with the accelerated microbial activity in the intestinal flora. Consequently, when introduced to toxic waste, it speeds up the breakdown process.

By cleaning the colon and regulating colonic bacteria, yucca helps to reduce the burden of the body’s other eliminative systems: such as kidneys, liver, lymph and blood. It can also be used as a laxative to correct constipation.

Yucca is high in vitamins A, B, and C, and contains potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, manganese and copper which make it very soothing to the intestinal tract.

In 1975, Dr. Robert Bingham, director of the National Arthritis Medical Clinic, tested Yucca saponin extract on 149 patients at the California center. Most of the patients later felt less pain, stiffness, and swelling in their joints. Others also received additional benefits, such as migraine relief, lower blood pressure, and cholestero/-triglyceride reduction. Dr. Bingham believes that the saponins aid digestion and absorption of fats. They work as cleansing substances, which help prevent absorption of harmful bacteria and protozoa from the bowel that cause stiffness and inflammation in the joints.

Yucca and Animals

Many people add yucca to their animals’ diet, to reduce the odour from litter boxes or pens. The glycocomponents of yucca bind the ammonia in the digestive tract and in the metabolic processes.
The ammonia is then neutralized into other nitrogenous compounds, giving improved conditions for the intestinal flora, and a more complete digestion. These components also diminish the other toxic gases emitted into the environment that are produced in the process of the degradation of animal excretion.

How to Use Yucca

Internal Use

10 drops in a little water or juice daily. Be aware – if yucca causes intestinal cramping and harsh bowel evacuation, combine with ginger and/or reduce amount.

Use of yucca for more than three months consecutively is not recommended, as it may interfere with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, such as A, D, E, and K.

External use

As a hair tonic/dandruff treatment – wet hair, and squeeze several drops of yucca extract directly onto the scalp. Message gently, rinse and shampoo as normal.

As a skin wash for rashes, minor burns and rub for aching joints – apply directly to skin and lather with a little water.
