Eczema

Eczema is a painful, often itchy skin inflammation that leads to scaling, flaking, thickening, and colour changes. Often, eczema results sensitivities (e.g. to light). It can also be caused by allergies and/or contact with perfumes, cosmetics, rubber, medicated creams and ointments, plants such as poison ivy, metals, or metal alloys (e.g. gold, silver, and nickel found in jewellery and zips). When left untreated, eczema can spread and become more severe.

Stress, especially chronic tension, can cause or exacerbate eczema, as can a fungal infection like candida or aspergillus. Atopic eczema is a hereditary form of the condition, which usually emerges in infancy. It typically appears on the face, in the bends of the elbows, and behind the knees. Often, family members have a history of allergies or asthma.

Treatment

At the Centre for Integrated Health, we investigate and identify the root causes that are triggering eczema symptoms. These root causes could include: mental stress, emotional issues, parasite influence, fungal influence, environmental irritants, nutritional deficiencies, and food intolerances.

Our treatment methods typically include topical applications of natural oils, gels and creams. These replace harsh steroids, which seek only to suppress the symptoms; not deal with the root cause. We also develop customized nutritional and other programmes of care.

Case Study

Mr. “S”, a 29 year old man, developed eczema five years ago. It was localized to one finger, but became progressively worse. His condition was aggravated by water, wind, warmth and chemicals. He suffered dry, itchy and stiff skin on the hands and spots (vesicles) under the skin, would “weep” and discharge.

We performed a food screening with BEST, and discovered that Mr. S had sensitivity to dairy, yeast, wheat, caffeine citrus and alcohol. A vitamin and mineral screening showed deficiencies in acidophilus, zinc and essential fatty acids. We developed a customized programme that helped Mr. S avoid “trigger” foods, and supplement his mineral and nutritional weaknesses.

Within a week, Mr. S. stated that he started to feel better; and though the symptoms seemed to worsen, it was temporary, as they began improving again. Today, Mr. S’s skin is now far less weepy, has smaller spots, is less itchy, and continues to improve!
