Vitamin D is needed by most adults and children to control the levels of calcium and phosphate in the human body. These nutrients (calcium and phosphates) are important to keep your bones, muscles and teeth strong and healthy. Not enough vitamin D can lead to bone deformities for children, and pains in your bones as you get older.
During late spring and summer, most adults and children should be able to obtain enough vitamin D from the sunlight and being outside, as the body makes vitamin D from sunlight falling directly on the skin.
But during the autumn and winter months we do not get enough vitamin D from sunlight, so a Vitamin D supplement is very important.
The UK Government is currently advising people to stay at home. For most people this will mean being indoors for much of the day, which could result in you not receiving enough vitamin D from sunshine exposure.
Existing public health advice is that if you are not going outdoors often, you should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms (1000iu) of vitamin D. We therefore recommend that whilst the stay at home measures are in place, everyone follows this advice (including children, pregnant and breastfeeding women and older people).
This advice is not about preventing coronavirus (COVID-19) or mitigating its effects. Vitamin D is needed to keep bones and muscles healthy.
